Residents living around Bramley Road in Bramhall say road safety and parking conditions have deteriorated sharply following the Liberal Democrat led Stockport Council’s decision to introduce charges at the Bramley Close (Railway Station) car park.
Residents met with local Councillor and road safety campaigner, Cllr Peter Crossen on Saturday 7th of February.
The car park, previously well used by commuters, is now noticeably under-occupied. In contrast, surrounding residential streets are seeing a rise in all-day parking, adding to long-standing problems including speeding traffic, unsafe parking on a blind bend, and regular driveway obstruction
Local residents have raised serious concerns about safety, pointing to two major road traffic accidents in recent years, numerous near misses, and growing fears that conditions could lead to a fatal incident if no action is taken.
A petition has now been launched calling on the Council to reverse or suspend the parking charges at Bramley Close and to urgently introduce a more appropriate Traffic Regulation Order for Bramley Road and nearby streets. Residents are asking for timed parking restrictions and effective speed-management measures to reduce risk and improve safety.
Cllr Peter Crossen said:
Residents have been warning for years that parking and speeding along Bramley Road is dangerous. Introducing charges at the railway station car park has simply displaced the even more vehicles into surrounding streets such ans Bramley Road and made an already unsafe situation worse. The car park is now underused, while residents are facing increased congestion, blocked driveways and real fears about road safety.I back residents calls for urgent and immediate action and call on the Council to urgently suspend these charges and put proper traffic and parking controls in place before someone is seriously hurt.
Residents and road users are being encouraged to add their name to the petition to demonstrate the strength of feeling and push for urgent action.
